Never had a more honest and helpful experience buying wine before. I will drive out of my way to go there because of Jes' constant positive and kind service and the amazing selection at AFFORDABLE prices.
Vastly helpful and knowledgeable.
Overpriced and poorly stocked store with rude staff.
Christmas Eve, my wife, son and I arrived at a dear friend's for the traditional Christmas Eve dinner. However, I was shocked -- shocked, I say -- to learn that the stash of Broker's gin I thought I’d left there had been consumed ... by ME ... during a previous visit! Undeterred, I sallied forth in search of a heathen liquor store that might still be open at 7:30 P.M. on Christmas Eve.
In any event, there I found not your usual assortment of Gordons, Tanqueray, Bombay, etc., but a limited selection of brands and varieties unknown to me. When I asked the proprietor if she had any traditional “LondonDry”-style gin, she pointed me to a bottle of Mayfair. I noticed two things immediately: It was expensive ($34 for a 750ml bottle), and it was packaged and bottled beautifully. I bought it, thinking “this had really be pretty damned good” as I left.
Upon arriving back at the home, I made my usual 5 oz. Martini (very dry, very cold, UP, with a spritz of lemon zest). The result was, in a word, spectacular! Flatly the finest gin I’ve ever tasted. The aromatics are forward, but not in the least overpowering or off-putting. Just flavorful as hell. It’s the sort of gin that would prompt me to seek the death penalty against anyone daring to make, oh, a Gin & Tonic, or a Tom Collins with it. (Almost as outrageous as making a Bourbon and Ginger -- a retched “cocktail” if ever there was one -- with a mix of Canada Dry and Pappy VanWinkle Reserve. Saints, protect us!)
In sum, if the rest of its fare is as carefully selected as the gin for sale there, Sage Wine & Spirits is a must whenever you decide to treat yourself well.
The first stop was closed (“Bastards!", I seethed under my breath.) But, my friend had mentioned a new shop near a favorite, no longer there, haunt -- “51 Front Street”. The new shop was called, cleverly enough, “55 Front Street”. (No, I just made that up. It’s actually “Sage Wine & Spirits”)
Owner is helpful and friendly. Selection is interesting and unique. Wish the hours were a little more compatible with my work schedule, but this is understandable, given the nature of the store.
Review from "Aaron Marshall" is more than a little suspicious. No details, doesn't seem to really apply, and is "Aaron's" only posted review. Ignore it. This place is great.
